Breakers too strong for Spirit

Sat, 12 December 2009

NSW Breakers had no trouble overhauling the DEC VicSpirit's 186 in their WNCL clash at Manly on Saturday. An unbeaten 90 from Alyssa Healy was the difference, as the Shooting Stars wicketkeeper helped steer the Breakers home by five wickets in the 37th over. Lisa Sthaleker (42) and Alex Blackwell (37) added support, while for the Spirit, leg-spinner Kristen Beams finished with 3/41 of her eight overs. After being sent into bat, the Spirit were left reeling at 6/89 before a fighting half-century from Renee Melton salvaged the innings. Melton (56 off 84 balls) shared a last-wicket partnership of 42 with debutant Naomi Fullwood (17 not out off 23) to help build the Spirit's total to 186. After beating the Breakers in Friday's Women's Twenty20 match, the Spirit couldn't keep that momentum going into today's match. The two sides meet again in another WNCL game tomorrow.
