Cameron guides Spirit home
Jess Cameron was the star as the Spirit recorded an easy eight-wicket victory over the Fury in Perth.
A half century from Jess Cameron has helped the Victoria Spirit record a convincing eight-wicket victory over the Western Fury in their Women's Twenty20 clash on Sunday afternoon.
The Fury posted 8-108 from their 20 overs after skipper Nicole Bolton won the toss and elected to bat at the newly opened Murdoch University Sports facility in Perth.
However, the target proved easy pickings for the Victorians as player-of-the-match Cameron blasted 61 from 44 deliveries to help her side to victory in 13.2 overs, the batswoman unluckily caught top-edging the ball by Fury keeper Jenny Wallace with two balls to spare, as she attempted to hit the winning runs.
Ellyse Villani also added 34 from 38 balls as the Spirit recovered from a poor start that saw Meg Lanning run out for five when the score was on five, her dismissal coming about through a quality throw from third man by Kate Burns.
However Villani and Cameron teamed up to add 103 as they took their side within touching distance of victory.
The Fury started the encounter well as Wallace and Bolton added 41 for the first wicket before Wallace was dismissed for 28 off 29 deliveries, bottom edging the ball through to Spirit keeper Emma Inglis off Annie Maloney's (1-22) bowling.
Bolton was next to go with the score on 54 during the ninth over as she mis-timed a drive and was caught at mid-on by Clea Smith for 11.
Carla Hunter (24) and Leigh Kasperek (five) combined to add 28 runs before Hunter was wrapped on the pads by Smith in the 15th over.
Hunter provided the first of Smith's two wickets for the match, as she ended with 2-33 from her four overs, the only multiple wicket-taker in Victoria's line-up.
Hunter's dismissal also precipitated a run of wickets as the Western Australia lost their next five batswomen for just 22 runs as they set Victoria what ultimately proved a gettable target.
