Cameron Stars in thriller
Wed, 3 March 2010
A half-century from DEC VicSpirit's Jess Cameron has led the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars to a thrilling two-wicket win over New Zealand in their One Day International at Queenstown on Wednesday. Chasing 229 for victory, the Southern Stars hit the winning runs on the last ball of the day - with Erin Osborne (13 not out off 10 deliveries) and VicSpirit's Julie Hunter (6 not out from 3) coming through in the clutch. Cameron, who also stood in as wicket-keeper for Alyssa Healy, helped rescue Australia after the Southern Stars were left floundering at 5/90. The 20-year-old made 68 off 81 balls, combining with Spirit captain Rachael Haynes (23 off 45) for a 49-run sixth-wicket stand and with Ellyse Perry for a 63-run partnership to help steer the Aussies towards victory. Earlier, VicSpirit's Sarah Elliott made 10 off 19, while Hunter was efficient with the ball, finishing with 1/38 from her 10 overs. After winning the first five 50-over matches against the White Ferns in Australia, the Southern Stars have struggled since - losing the past five Twenty20 matches between the two countries. The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars will be hoping to continue their winning form in the remaining ODI's at Invercargill on Saturday and Sunday.
