Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit squad for opening round announced
Victorian selectors have named a squad of 12 for the Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit's opening round matches against the Queensland Fire at Harry Trott Oval.
The VicSpirit will field the same 12 for all three matches, beginning on Friday afternoon (3:00pm) with a Twenty20, continuing on Saturday (10:00am) with a WNCL fixture and concluding on Sunday morning with another Twenty20 (10:00am).
Dandenong's Kelly Applebee, who was not given a VicSpirit contract this season, has been rewarded for her impressive start to the Premier competition with selection in the side.
Applebee made 67 in Dandenong's opening match of the Esteelle Premier Firsts season against Box Hill.
Coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick says that a player of Applebee's experience was needed.
"With Rachael Haynes and Renee Melton leaving the team during the off-season we lose a fair bit of experience but we regain that with Kelly," Fitzpatrick said.
"She leads by example at training and has been doing all the right things.
"She is a great slip-fielder but will also be a boundary rider in the latter overs".
Fitzpatrick is wary of the Queensland side - especially their opening batter Melissa Bulow, who hit the first century in WT20 from just 51 deliveries in their match against Tasmanian Roar last Friday.
"Bulow is a dangerous batter so we will have to be very disciplined," Fitzpatrick said.
"They won their three matches fairly easily last week so we will have to come ready to play".
