The DEC Spirit have defeated Western Fury by four wickets in a thrilling Women's T20 match at the Geelong Cricket Ground on Friday afternoon. After the Fury posted 6-125 from their 20 overs, the DEC Spirit survived some jitters before reaching the required target in the final over of the match. Queensland opening batswoman Jenny Wallace anchored the Fury's innings with a run-a-ball 41 before Kath Hempenstall trapped her lbw in front. Nicole Bolton chipped in with 16 off as many balls before she was run out by Jess Cameron to leave the Fuy struggling at 4-77. Rene Farrell (24) and captain Peta Merrilees (29 not out) ensured Victoria would have a tough run chase as they added valuable runs at the end. Sarah Elliot was the pick of the Victorian bowlers with 2-22, while Briana Binch (1-21) and Hempenstall (1-20) picked up one each. The DEC Spirit made a steady start with Elyse Villani smashing four boundaries in her knock of 23, while Jess Cameron contributed 39 to have the hosts in control. But Kate Pulford removed them both with a pair of run outs to reduce Victoria to 4-99. That became 6-99 three balls later after Rennee Chappell got two wickets, but captain Rachael Haynes (17 not out) and Binch (10 not out) successfully steered the DEC Spirit home with five balls to spare.
