Ex-Victorian Haynes lead NSW to WNCL title

The Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit has been defeated by NSW Breakers by 70 runs in the WNCL final played at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Led by ex-Victorian captain Rachael Haynes, who made 156, the highest individual score in a WNCL final, NSW posted 7-310, also a record team score in a WNCL final.

VicSpirit was not without a chance when they were 2-175 in the 30th over, but a collapse of 5-22 in the middle order ended any hopes of a Victorian win as they were bowled out in the 42nd over.

Winning the toss and sending the Breakers into bat, VicSpirit got off to the perfect start when Julie Hunter trapped Leah Poulton in front from the first delivery of the match.

When Danni Wyatt found the edge of Alex Blackwell's bat in the following over, NSW were 2-2.

Lisa Sthalekar and Haynes then combined for a 144-run partnership to put the Breakers back on top.

After Sthalekar departed for 74 from the bowling of Hunter, Haynes took over, becoming the first player to score a century in a WNCL final, reaching her hundred in 106 deliveries.

She lifted it up another level after bringing up her ton racing from 100 to 150 in just 31 balls.

Haynes was finally dismissed in the 49th over when she holed out of the bowling of Kathleen Hempenstall.

Despite losing opener Meg Lanning for 24, Victoria's chase got off to a flying start as Jess Cameron (46) and Elyse Villani (75) put on a 103 runs for the second wicket.

Villani and Elliott (28) put Victoria in a strong position when they were 2-174 in the 30th over but they lost 5-22 as Villani, Elliott, Wyatt (2), Kelly Applebee (3) and Emma Inglis (7) were all dismissed trying to maintain the run-rate.

A 31-run eighth-wicket partnership from 21 deliveries between Hunter (10) and Emily McIntyre (22) gave the Victorians a glimmer of hope but NSW were not going to let the match slip and claimed the final two wickets to dismiss the Victorians for 240 in the 42nd over.
