Hunter begins Premier season in style
Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit all-rounder Julie Hunter and former player Kelly Applebee guided Dandenong to victory against Box Hill in the opening match of the Essteele Premier Firsts season.
Hunter made a rapid 37 and also claimed the prized wicket of Meg Lanning in her spell of 2-10.
Applebee, who has returned to Dandenong after not playing last season, held the Lions' innings together with her knock of 67.
After a delayed start, the match was reduced to 29 overs per side.
The Mustangs claimed two early wickets with VicSpirit rookie Anna Lanning dismissing Lions' opening batter Belinda de Feyter for two.
Box Hill looked to have the upper hand when Laura Croft was bowled for one to leave Dandenong 4-65.
Applebee and Hunter then combined for what turned out to be a match-winning 75 run partnership.
Annie-Rose Maloney pulled the reins in on Dandenong's innings late, taking three wickets in the final over to restrict the final score to 7-141.
Once Hunter dismissed Meg Lanning - with Applebee taking a sharp catch at second slip - Box Hill was always in trouble.
VicSpirit players Meg Lanning (nine), Anna Lanning (three) and Maloney (three) all failed to fire as Box Hill were dismissed for 98 in the final over.
The other match in the round between Plenty Valley and Brunswick Park was abandoned due to rain.
