Hunter leads from the front

Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit star Julie Hunter has helped Dandenong stay alive in the race to the finals of the VWCA Essteele Premier Firsts with an upset win over Essendon-Maribyrnong Park at the weekend.

Hunter finished with the economical figures of 1-19 from nine overs as she and former VicSpirit captain Sarah Edwards (2-19 from nine overs) built pressure throughout the EMP innings.

The Bombers managing 134 in 47 overs thanks largely to VicSpirit players Emily McIntyre (44), Molly Strano (30) and Briana Binch (26).

In reply it was Edwards (87 not out) and Hunter (24 not out) who again did the job, closing out the match in the 34th over to keep Dandenong's finals hopes alive.

The Lions will need to win their remaining two games and have results go their way to have any chance of sneaking into third position.

In the other VWCA match, Box Hill accounted for Plenty Valley by 39 runs at Box Hill City Oval.

VicSpirit batter Jess Cameron tried hard for the Bats with a brisk 36 that included two fours and two sixes, however, the Mustangs total of 181 was too much for the visiting team.

Round 23 of the Essteele Premier Firsts sees Plenty Valley take on Dandenong in what will be a must-win clash for both sides.

Meanwhile, Brunswick Park will be looking to add four more points against second placed EMP to remain in third spot on the ladder.
