VicSpirit begin WNCL campaign in Perth

The Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit team leave for Perth today ahead of their opening weekend of matches in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL).

Led by captain Meg Lanning, the side will face the ACT Meteors on Saturday at the WACA before returning on Sunday to face the Western Fury at the same venue.

The weekend is also expected to see several debuts for players in VicSpirit colours.

Lanning said the squad had a positive pre-season and was enjoying working with the new faces in the squad.

“I think the group is as fit as it’s ever been,” said Lanning.

“Obviously we’re all really excited to be playing some games now.

“It certainly is very different this year compared to previous years, we’ve got some young players in Makinley Blows and Hayleigh Brennan as well who have performed really well at club cricket.”

“Jess Cameron comes back in as well, a very powerful batter who is a match winner in her own right,” Lanning added.

Among the new and returning faces is former Australian player Cameron, Shooting Stars squad members Sophie Molineux and Hayleigh Brennan and Alana King and Makinley Blows who both competed in the Rebel WBBL in the inaugural season.

VicSpirit Head Coach David Hemp said he was pleased with the team’s preparation going into the opening weekend.

“It’s gone very well so far. Despite Melbourne’s wet weather in recent months we’ve been able to do some work outdoors and get on turf which is important. I know the players can’t wait to get over to the WACA and get stuck into playing,” Hemp said.

“Every game is hard and the WNCL is a highly competitive tournament. A positive weekend for us will be about who adjusts to the conditions best and the pressure we can put on our opposition. If we can put runs on the board we’ll give ourselves opportunities to get results,” Hemp added.

“We’ve got depth in our batting and talent in our bowling stocks so I’m looking forward to seeing those combinations come together in Perth as we get underway,” Hemp said.

The Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit last won the WNCL in the 2004-2005. South Australia’s Southern Scorpions are the defending champions.
