The Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit have claimed their first win of the 2017-18 WNCL season today, defeating Tasmania by four wickets at the MCG.
It was the first game the VicSpirit had played at the MCG since 2012.
The younger members of the team stood up throughout the day, with Makinley Blows (92*), Sophie Molineux (4-27 and 37) and Georgia Wareham (1-12 and 22) combining to steer the hosts home.
VicSpirit captain Kristen Beams was pleased with the performance of the younger players and the overall performance of the team.
“It’s so good when you see young players not only be a part of the team, but actually start to dominate in the team,” said Beams.
“From a batting point of view it was just about taking a bit of ownership, and we’ve been waiting for someone to bat through the innings and I think for Makinley to do that today, we needed someone in that top order to stand up and to take that nervousness out of the change rooms a little bit and I think she did a great job.”
“There’s many sides to her game that I think we haven’t seen yet and I’m looking forward to that.”
“It’s always special when we have the opportunity to play on our home ground the MCG and it’s an amazing feeling, and you’ve got this ‘Big V’ uniform on.. we did Victoria proud today.”
The VicSpirit next face South Australia on Monday at the MCG from 10:00am.
